Alex Gonzalez will be next creative director at W

The vote is in. W Editor-in-Chief Stefano Tonchi has named the magazine’s new creative director: Alex Gonzalez, who will replace Jody Quon. After considering taking on the creative responsibilities on his own, Tonchi elected to get some support—especially after Quon had left three months ago.

“I had to close before Christmas, and really I was here until the last day, the last hour,” Tonchi said to WWD. “Basically, I didn’t have one day off for months.”

Under his guidance, however, the magazine has been faring well, with advertising pages increasing 13 percent from September through December, according to a spokeswoman –- Tonchi’s first four issues.

Tonchi and Gonzalez have a surprising history. After working together at L’Uomo Vogue, they ended up years later living in the same apartment building in New York.

“We both have this international background and we look at W as an international brand,” said Tonchi.

Gonzalez brings a wealth of professional experience to the position: He co-founded AR New York and has put in time as a creative director on GQ, German Vogue and Manner Vogue. He has declared he will not make any hires of his own at this point.

No definitive word yet on when Gonzalez will assume the position, but he told WWD he hopes to “have a large imprint in the September issue.”
