At NYFW: High-Waisted Trousers

Amid an ocean of whites and sheer fabrics, there was one trend this Fashion Week that stood out from the rest: high-waisted trousers. From bright hues to subdued neutrals, beautifully tailored pieces stole the show, serving as the perfect contrast to the more feminine collections.

Jason Wu revisited retro chic by modernizing the tailored trouser in his vintage-inspired showcase. Wu used neat stripes and sheer blouses to keep the line fresh. Whether it was in the form of bow-front tops tucked into high-waisted pants, or smartly cut trousers paired with bandeaus and sheer button-ups, Jason Wu catered to the career woman, creating pieces perfect for the office.

Vena Cava updated the retro look by incorporating gold-lined pockets to its high-waisted trouser, incorporating a touch of glamour into the work-appropriate attire. Designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock call their aesthetic “classic American sport,” playing with an understyled approach that kept the classy collection cohesive. From linen suits to shirt-dresses, the two reinterpreted the term “office casual” on the runway.

Diane von Furstenberg revamped the traditional pant via soft jewel tones, luscious fabrics and the ever-so-feminine ribbon belts. Von Furstenberg traded the classic wrap dress for the suit, offering a twist on this American tradition for the 21st-century woman. From electric blues to peachy hues, the collection was feminine and refined but all the while influential, offering an interpretation on classic looks—a tactic von Furstenberg has quickly become an expert at.
