At NYFW: Watercolors

When it came to prints on the runway this week, some were fit to be framed. Lovely, washed-out prints took on the look of watercolors decorating silky, loose-fitting fabrics.

Custo Barcelona, known for a no-fear approach to color and contrast, brought all it got to the New York runways. Never a fan of solid colors or monochromatic ensembles, Custo Barcelona showcased neon-infused getups with mismatched printed leggings and patchwork coats topping off multicolored dresses. Its tie-dyed jumper (pictured above) in shades of pink, blue, green and yellow displayed the new art-focused spring trend.

Lost in a garden, Lela Rose played homage to the bold blossoms of spring. Bright yellow and orange skirts mimicked a tulip with petallike layers. Models showed offbeat floral prints, featuring oversized flowers adorning the bodice of their dresses. One of the designer’s closing pieces, a multicolored tiered skirt, could have easily been mistaken for a delicate flower.

Tracy Reese brought runway viewers a taste of vacation, and the ocean-blue backdrop set the stage for her beach-meets-chic line. Although the pieces reinterpreted preppy – short, tweed skirts with oversized pockets and printed, button-up dresses – the line bended the rules, with feminine see-through cover-ups and neon-printed sheer pants. The post-beach look (pictured above) could certainly be worn after a dip in the pool or a day at a Miami beach – or worn out for a night on the town. Although many of Reese’s pieces (no pun intended) seem to veer on the professional side – tons of suits and knits – she likes to show her shoppers that a working woman can have fun with the best of them.
