Barneys promotes Simon Doonan to creative ambassador-at-large
In a statement released Monday, Barneys New York announced that creative director Simon Doonan would leave his position for another within the company: creative ambassador-at-large.
Dennis Freedman, former creative director of W Magazine, will take Doonan’s previous position as CD. He will oversee creative direction at Co-op and Barneys.com as well.
“For decades Barneys New York has stood for creative innovation. I am thrilled by the opportunity to creatively lead the company forward,” Freedman said in a statement. “Starting from New York, which is the most culturally dynamic city in the world, I will strive to incorporate modern creative energy into the Barneys brand in the years ahead.”
In addition to Doonan’s previous responsibilities as CD—which included public relations, window dressing and special events—Doonan will now be considered the social ambassador of the brand “with links to all creative and communication areas including social media.”
“Simon has been an intrinsic part of the Barneys DNA for close to 25 years,” said Mark Lee, CEO of Barneys New York, in a press release. “I am thrilled to work with him and to have him continue to bring his unique wit and multifaceted talents to Barneys in this new role of Creative Ambassador-at-Large.”
Doonan has been at Barneys New York for 24 years and is known for his legendary and eclectic window projects.
