Berlin Spring 2012 Fashion Week Apparel Wrap-Up

Berlin Fashion Week may be one of the lesser-known fashion weeks, but it is still a hidden gem in its own right. For Spring 2012, Berlin’s designers went for fresh, wearable looks with extensive draping, a touch of reworked ‘90s styles and muted color tones, reported WWD.

Several designers featured one-pieces in their lineups. Mongrels in Common revived overalls from its grungy past, making them sophisticated in black and camel-colored silks. The overalls were styled with a sleeveless button-up collared shirt for a dressy look or a ruffled bandeau for a more casual appearance.

Hugo Boss’ collection exhibited a great deal of whites, blues, reds and silvers, displayed in one-piece jumpsuits with slim pants topped with a cropped jacket in silver, a big apparel color for Spring 2012. Escada Sport went the opposite direction, creating relaxed, loose-fitting jumpsuits in assorted styles, including long-sleeved, sleeveless and crossover camis.

Skinny, streamlined pants made a strong appearance on the runways, but designers also explored wider options. Michael Sontag’s wide-leg maxi trousers worked well with loose, asymmetrical sleeve tops, boxy jackets and volumized trench coats. Strenesse Blue revisited flared pants from the ‘70s, and well, the ‘90s too, in blues, neons and denim.

Still on the radar for another season is the maxi dress. Escada, Strenesse Blue and Hugo Boss showcased flowing maxis in watercolor prints, snake prints and a pop of bright red. Designers, including Perrot Schaad, also looked to incorporate the breezy feel of the maxi into the upper part of the looks. Perrot Schaad’s tops showcased a short, fluttering train, while Hugo Boss took the maxi incorporation to a further extreme with a sleeveless top boasting a floor-length train.

The standout tops during this runway season were the cropped top and the updated button-down. Vladimir Karaleev also threw fresh crop tops in the mix of his collection of draped silhouettes, creating loose crop tops with a seamless hem, paired over form-fitting dresses. He also added a thick band of elastic into the hemline of the top, endowing it with a modern vibe. Button-downs reached the floor in several collections, including Escada, Perret Schaad and – possibly the most dramatic one – Lala Berlin.
