Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring 2013 trends

While New York Fashion Week is just around the corner, Copenhagen Fashion Week has already shown the first glimpse of Spring 2013. Over 75 designers showcased their new collections in the span of four days, revealing an initial look at emerging and evolving trends. This season presented a focus on sporty-inspired style as silhouettes referred to active wear and boxier shapes. Pants and shorts took a nod to the men with loose, relaxed styling, yet discovered a feminine note with delicate materials. Naturally, color was important to Spring with various shades of yellow leading the charge. The season promises to be an exciting one filled with stylish ideas.

Neoprene, mesh and athletic-related materials have taken a dominant stand with the sports trend, and in Spring, Anne Sofie Madsen and Johanna Pihl continue the theme with inspired silhouettes. Daydresses and tops referenced sports bra shapes, straps and crop tops.

Tops this season take a boxy turn with airy, squared styles. Whiite, Bruuns Bazaar and Malene Birger evolved the tee with kimono short sleeves and added interest with cutouts and embellishments. Necklines were round, showing off the shoulders.

Leather has progressed from a fall/winter fabric to a year-round option and moved into new categories. While it was primarily a pants and skirts material, leather was shown at Copenhagen in loose short-sleeve dresses, jumpers and T-shirts and tanks. Silhouettes became looser and more relaxed for Spring with smooth textures.

Trousers referred to menswear styling with loose-fitting designs that tapered at the ankle. YDE, Malene Birger and Designers Remix contrasted the masculine attitude with feminine, playful prints ranging from watercolor florals to paisley and stripes. The trousers were mainly paired with button-up shirts and blazers.

Sheer blouses and tops developed in two directions for Spring 2013. In flowy silhouettes or pleated techniques, the material was feminine and demure. Alternatively shown in long-sleeve with round necklines, it exuded a masculine and athletic quality. Sheer fabrics also acted as a plain canvas background embellished with appliqués and beads, as seen by Anne Sofie Madsen.

Miniskirts were prevalentshown on the runways, particularly with slits or silhouettes that resembled them. Yet, it wasn’t the traditional slit. The new styles were created from wraparounds or cutouts that created a triangular shape with a modern vibe.

Similar to trousers, shorts referenced menswear styling showing loose, longer shapes. Johanna Pihl and Whiite created shorts that stretched past mid-thigh. Bermuda shorts were present as well as drawstring designs and elastic options.

Across the Copenhagen runways, yellow was a key color. In past seasons, the color was bright, neon even, but in Spring 2013, it takes a turn for the pale. Yellow was light and soft, creating a breezy feel. Materials added to the mood with delicate, flowing options.
