Despite Dour News and Winter Chill, New York Fashion Week Strutted Its Stuff—and Predicted LUX Tim

How do we love thee fashion? Let us count the ways.

Fashion Week in New York forged ahead this year, with the collections off and running at a full gallop through 81 designers and 7 days of watching their creations come down the catwalk. There were more shows than one could shake a stick at, and events every night that would bury the best of the most party-hardy fashionista. Highly anticipated shows showed up as usual, from designers Zac Posen, Donna Karan, Narciso Rodriguez, Vera Wang, Michael Kors, Tommy—too many to mention—and that’s not even counting the more unknowns, like Chris Benz, A Detacher, Juan Carlos Obando, and Suno. Even Victoria Beckham showed-her fourth collection actually. I suppose if one loves to dress the part, one should join the club too, no?

And this year saw no slowing of the celebrity crowd, out in full force: To kick off things on opening night, Guns ‘n’ Roses’ Axel Rose performed at the John Varvatos party (17 songs!), co-hosted with L’Uomo Vogue. Patti Smith stole the show at the Milk Studios for the LNA event the same night. The regular round—and the new round—of Hollywood beauties came out in support of their fav designers: Mena Suvari was spotted at the Jill Stuart show; Gossip Girl mom Kelly Rutherford donned a winter white-minidress, brave soul, at the same, and gal-of-the-moment Kristen Bell, with movie-of-the-moment When in Rome, sat front row at Rebecca Taylor, with Carmen Electra close by. Herve Leger devotees saw the lovelies sporting the skintight, but oh-so-flattering creations-like Maggie Rizer, glowing in purple bondage. Starlets and socialites alike were represented by Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill) and the Tins, respectively. Laura Linney came out for Oscar (de la Renta), and American Royalty, Lee Radziwill, and adopted American Royalty, Tina Brown sat and watched at DVF. The former First Lady of France, Cécilia Attias (who moved back to the States just last year) made a showing there as well, since she has been friends with DVF for years now. Catherine Malandrino brought in a huge crowd, as usual, including actress Kate Walsh of Private Practice with her boy toy in tow. Isaac (does he need his surname?) put on a beautiful show with Russell Simmons sitting front row aside Veronica Webb nearby Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, with W/Fairchild bigwigs Patrick McCarthy and Ed Nardoza just down the way. All the uptown ladies showed up for Michelle Smith’s latter day demure creations at Milly, a designer who has rocketed to fame and great following after only a few seasons (taking an internship at Gaultier in Paris obviously served her well). She reflected what many others did as well this season: Lux, lux, lux: fur, lace, high heels, beading, ladylike everything. It will still be fun to be a girl this coming season, that is for sure.

And anyone who is anyone showed up for the last show of the season—and the last show ever at the tents—at Tommy Hilfiger. The New York collections will move to Lincoln Center from Bryant Park this coming fall for the Spring 2011 collections, a decidedly bigger venue and one used to the technicalities of putting on a production (without having to set up electrical outlets and sound systems in the New York City street). We will always remember the tents though, and all the memories that happened underneath them. Ah, the love affair continues ………….
