Fall 2011: Marc Jacobs

It was all about the polka dots during Monday’s Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 runway show at New York Fashion Week.

Hosiery, hats, bags, apparel … You name it, it had polka dots on it.

An “it” designer in fashion, Jacobs is known for setting the trends for women.

“I wanted something strict and severe,” Marc Jacobs told Style.com about his newest collection.

Latex, the plasticlike fabric, opened the show on a pair of silver pants.

Jacobs’ focus on texture made the show a fun departure from prior collections. He worked on the latex getups with British fashion company House of Harlot. Even the sequins weren’t really sequins, but actually fashioned from the shiny material.

Nevertheless, the styles were fun and flirty. The faux-sequin skirts resembled the scales of a fish, and the fabric served as a sparkly parallel to the spot trend.

Besides dots, another vintage trend that made a comeback was the peplum skirt, which added some old-fashioned sexiness. Secretary attire was reinterpreted with the addition of sheers and lace, two huge trends in the Valentine’s Day show.

Showstoppers included head-to-toe lace numbers, slightly see-through, and body hugging dresses in delicious jewel tones. The Victorian era never looked so modern.
