Giving Back Made Easy: Goodsearch

Turn your everyday actions into good for the world with Goodsearch. Every time you search the Web, shop online, play a game, eat in a restaurant and more, you can generate funds for your favorite cause. Goodsearch makes a donation to the charity of your choosing per each action. You get the same experience: Yahoo search results, the same stores and restaurants, but at no cost to you, while your top nonprofit raises some much-needed funds.

“There are a lot of really wonderful campaigns where you buy a certain product and money is raised for a certain cause,” JJ Ramberg, co-founder of Goodsearch, said. “We have taken that concept even further. Through Goodsearch, you can choose any cause you want – you get to choose the cause closest to your heart. In addition, it takes things that you are already doing – searching the Internet, shopping online, playing games etc., and turns them into ways to earn funds for that cause.”

The effort began with a Yahoo-powered search engine that donates a penny per search. Now it includes shopping – working with more than 2,500 stores, including Amazon – 10,000 dining options, games, surveys, offers and other opportunities.
“Goodsearch is a way to feel good. We all feel good when we do something to make the world better. At Goodsearch, we feel great when each year we get tens of thousands of letters telling us stories about how we've helped find cures for diseases, purchased needed school supplies for students, sheltered the homeless and saved the lives of countless animals. Through using Goodsearch, you will feel great and feel celebrated each time you make a difference with your daily actions,” the site claimed.

Feed a child, plant a tree, aid in cutting-edge research, help give a book – the options are endless. And it is practically effortless – no extra time or cost to you. It’s no wonder Goodsearch attracted more than 15 million users last year, supporting around 100,000 nonprofits and schools. You pick the cause, whether a well-known national organization such as The American Red Cross or simply a local animal shelter. Goodsearch is happy to add any listing. Then go to Goodsearch’s webpage to search the Internet, shop at a participating online store or visit a participating restaurant, and a percent of what you spend is donated to your chosen nonprofit. You can see the impact as the funds accumulate right on the site. Giving back has never been so easy.

“We believe doing good can be simple,” Ramberg said. “And a simple act, combined with those of the millions of other people using Goodsearch can make a big difference in the world.”

Goodsearch has a simple history. Having always been active in the community, Ramberg and his brother were looking to break new ground in the sphere of giving back. “We knew that everyone has a cause they support, but don’t always have as much money or time to dedicate to that cause as they’d like. So, we wanted to figure out a way that people could help their favorite causes every single day,” the co-founder declared.

Search engines were pulling in roughly $6 billion a year. The brothers began to wonder if it would be possible to redirect some of that revenue into the nonprofit world. The two founders put their heads together and their time together, working 24/7, and created Goodsearch, initially with just a search engine. Since that point, the company has raised almost $10 million for causes big and small through more than a billion charitable actions.

“We were incredibly heartened right from the start to see how the idea caught on. Nonprofits and schools started learning about Goodsearch and letting their supporters know to use the site on their behalf. People told their friends. It spread quickly by word of mouth. That first year, we printed all of the checks and addressed the envelopes ourselves and to this day, that was the most exciting and proudest moment of my career,” Ramberg declared.
