Healthier Homemade: 7 Recipes to Try at Home

In an effort to be health-conscious, many of us are careful to scour the grocery store for the best food products that contribute to our diet goals. Though it takes some extra effort, many of these grocery staples can be made healthier, tastier and more cost-effective at home. Save time reading food labels and take some pleasure in knowing exactly what you're eating by trying the recipes below. We searched the web and found seven that we can't wait to try.

Peanut Butter

Many commercially produced peanut butters contain refined sugars or trans fats. Try making it at home for a healthy, fresh version that you can get creative with. Experiment with a tablespoon of maple syrup, raisins or maybe some chocolate chips to keep it interesting. And don't stop at peanuts! You can make tasty butters with almost any kind of nut. Try out almond, hazelnut ot even pistachio butter to give interesting flavor to your next baking or cooking project.

Salad Dressing

Seriously, just put down that store-bought ranch dressing and whip up something way healthier and more exciting. The possibilities are endless. We liked the lemon chia seed dressing idea, but if you really are craving a creamy ranch, try this tofu-based version, which eliminates the crazy fat content and turns that basic salad into a high-protein meal.

Granola

Granola is not usually thought of as an unhealthy food, but sometimes there are a ton of sugars lurking in there. Try this quinoa pumpkin seed granola for a protein-packed, healthy breakfast treat.

Nutrition Bars

How much time have you spent in the grocery store comparing labels on expensive nutrition bars? If, like us, the answer is “a lot,” save yourself the hassle and just make them at home! Know every ingredient and save some money with these yummy oatmeal chocolate chip bars.

Sweet and Sour Mix for Margaritas

Store-bought drink mixes are typically full of nothing but sugar, salt and additives we don’t care to think about. This homemade margarita mix still has plenty of sugar in it, but at least it has a lot of fresh lemon and lime juice to add some citrusy goodness to your cocktail. Not to mention, it will taste way better!

Fries

We’re still spooked by those stories of McDonald’s fries that never go bad. Gross! These ones are tossed with herbs and a little olive oil and oven-baked for a crave-satisfying side that is actually pretty healthy. Make these instead of store-bought frozen fries and fast food versions.

Ketchup

The perfect homemade condiment to go with your homemade fries! Store-bought ketchup often contains refined sugars and other undesirable ingredients. Try this recipe with tomato paste and seasonings to turn your everyday staple into a gourmet complement to your sandwiches, eggs and more.
