LFW Spring 2012: Mulberry

London fashion has always been known for its own eccentric creativity, kitschy vibes melted with sophistication and self-expression through style. With so much inspiration to offer, it’s no wonder Mulberry looked to its home city as a muse for its new Spring 2012 collection at London Fashion Week. Mulberry creative director Emma Hill found direction from an array of colors, the dreary weather, sportswear, encrusted crystal embellishments and lace, reported Style.com.

The show kicked off with a sporty set of sunshine yellow, grass green and colorblocking “Skittles-colored” looks. The opening ensemble was appropriately a rain jacket, ready for the spring April showers. The slick outerwear was styled with a sophisticated, cream-colored, sheer, floor-length skirt and matching iconic yellow Alexa satchel. Hill also added yellow or green athletic-inspired dresses and shorts completed with drawstring ties and baseball tees. Separates were paired with buttery light tan leather skirts, shorts and cropped jackets. The yellow and green color combination added pink to created wide panels of colorblocked dresses in floor-length and knee-length options.

The bright colors mellowed down into prints and lace in an oatmeal shade for the second set. Lace, knee-length skirts and cropped jackets had the perfect amount of ladylike looks, combined with graphic prints. Lace also popped on its own in a long, three-quarter-sleeves, lean, floor-length dress. The intricate material created the bodice and alternating encircled bands on the skirt of the dress. The simple color palette blended in casual pieces, displayed on hooded sweaters, gym shorts and one-piece jumpers.

Continuing the theme of sporty yet ladylike chic, navy, black and gold appeared in slick rain gear, anoraks and sheer dresses. Hill mixed in pieces encrusted in crystals for a glamorous touch. Knee-length pencil dresses and skirts stood out with either gold or blue embellishments.

Mulberry, known for its classic satchels, introduced the new Travel collection on the runway, which included a boxy camera bag perfectly on-trend.

With the variety of inspiration, the collection could have lost its way and been fragmented, but Hill managed to create a cohesive number blending the unexpected sport vibe and alluring chic details.
