LFW Spring 2012: Sass & Bide

Eclectic mash-ups are what Sass & Bide do best. The duo behind the magic, Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton, love mixing textures and patterns. And for London Fashion Week, they did just that. This time around, though, Spring 2012 saw a more streamlined collection, reported Style.com. Clarke and Middleton still had their usual flair – only with fewer layers versus before.

The collection started with a foundation of sleek silhouettes. Elongated looks of tulip skirts, relaxed pants, asymmetrical dresses, scuba neoprene tanks and blouses with flowing trains created a fresh canvas to build on. There were no voluminous skirts, ruffles or anything in sight that didn’t evoke clean, minimal lines.

Styling was also done in a neatly by stylist Julia Sarr-Jamois, fashion director of the Wonderland. Cami and full tank tops were paired with long and shorts skirts, and button-up blouses were fitted with shorts. Models strutted down the runway with their hair pulled back in center-parted, smooth chignons.

From the streamlined silhouette foundation, the fun began with an insertion of color. With navy, white and black as base colors, Clarke and Middleton brought in bright, eye-catching shades of poppy, blood orange, cobalt blue, metallics and chartreuse. Alongside the palette, the duo worked in tribal patterns, polka dots and colorblocking.

The combination resulted in stunning, bold looks of multicolor tribal tanks paired with navy minis or white long tulip skirts, flowing yellow button-ups contrasted with zigzagged print shorts, and metallic silver tanks were styled with long, polka-dotted skirts. Pieces in vivid colors were continually combined with white, black, navy or prints for a balanced look.

Accessories played a key part in the collection, infusing the catchy colors and tribal silhouettes. Chartreuse and poppy necklaces came in a range of options with thick chokers, spiked native collars and bibs. The colors also trickled into funky, triangular-shaped clutches. The combination of brights and unique styles presented a more contemporary appeal that complemented the streamlined collection perfectly.

Footwear, on the other hand, performed a neutralizing role. Heels were simple in tan or black leather with a slight pop of color. Open-toe booties boasted an asymmetrical topline and beaded ankle-straps, while sandals had plain cuffs and a skinny strap across the vamp.

The collection was rich in color and texture exactly where it should be. Sass & Bide managed to make tribal influence look modern, sleek and clean – just in time for a fresh Spring.
