London 2012 Cultural Olympiad: ‘Artists Taking the Lead’ Project
Incorporating creative genius for the upcoming Olympian event in London has inspired a complete new project called ‘Artists Taking the Lead.’
This new venture was developed in collaboration with the Arts of Council England, London 2012 and the Arts Councils of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Signifying a call to action for inspired local artists to submit their vision that celebrates the 2012 Olympian theme and engages those from around the world to be a part of the festivities.
Over 2,000 artists from different parts of the UK submitted their ideas from March 19, 2009 through May 29, 2009. Then, a panel of independently selected judges went through each of the submissions and ranked them according to four core points of the project. These include: is it an original idea, what is reflected in the concept according to the inspired location, can they be built by June of 2012 and do they celebrate the values and vision of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, Olympic Games?
In this short-list of possible projects, each of the 59 artists who made the cut was given £5,000 to turn their idea into a full proposal. This will then be reviewed through another round of judging and narrowed down to the top 12 finalists.
All 12 of these artists will have their concept fully developed and shown at the 2012 Olympic festivities, including a unification of all of the ideas in the opening celebration of the Games.
Expect the announcement for the final 12 to be on October 22. There will be different amounts awarded to the final selection of artists, depending on the region they selected to showcase.
According to the official website, the value of the commissions awarded to the chosen artists will be:
* Nine English regions £500,000 each
* Northern Ireland £190,000
* Scotland £460,000
* Wales £230,000
So LUX Nation, what do you think of this inspired project for the 2012 Olympic games?
