3 Takeaway Trends from L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival

While L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival has come to an end, the trends from the Land Down Under will undoubtedly be seen throughout the fall and winter 2013 season. Creating trends while staying true to its cultural pulse, Australian designers really stepped up their game this year at the festival, making a global proclamation — by way of design — that Melbourne should be on every fashion enthusiasts “city to watch” list.

Bright Colors

Perhaps it’s because the Australian summer is in the midst of the rest of the world’s winter, but unlike New York, London and Paris, the Aussie color palate was bright and cheery—calling to mind summer nostalgia in the coldest of seasons. Oranges, yellows, red, turquoise, fuschia and like were seen bouncing up and down the runways and gave the feeling of a mid-season vacation. Whether it was a solid color, a print, trousers or a flirty cocktail dress, bright colors were all the rage in Melbourne.

Bold Prints

Another summer-esque trend for fall and winter 2013 are bold prints. From floral to quirky digital patterns, bold prints were all over the runways. Some designers chose floral patterns, others such as Camilla chose bohemian-inspired, loud prints. Either way, this trend was a fun take on winter, with a slight nod to resort wear.

Leather

Even on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, the fall and winter leather trend has caught on. While leather shorts were a definite staple on the Aussie catwalk, designers also made sleek and sexy dresses and pencil skirts out of the animal skin. The leather trend never mingled with the bright color or bold print, creating a touch of added dark drama when added to a collection.
