Louis Vuitton reveals Yayoi Kusama themed store in New York
On Tuesday at 12:30PM, Louis Vuitton unveiled the Yayoi Kusama polka-themed store in New York City. The Vuitton and Kusama collaboration came to life on the boutique at 57th Street and Fifth Avenue with endless black dots in various sizes emblazoned on the building.
“The number of dots is so obsessive, no one can count them,” said Louis Vuitton chairman and chief executive officer Yves Carcelle, as reported by WWD.com.
Kusama was present for the opening, appropriately making a grand entrance in a polka-dotted wheelchair and yellow and black dotted ensemble. The event coincides with the New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art’s latest exhibition of Kusama’s work, which opens on July 12.
The store windows displayed Kusama’s tentacle-like nerves motif in red and white polka dots along with a miniature of the artist. However, the window installations lacked any merchandise.
“That was the idea,” said Carcelle. “When you work with an artist, it’s not a commercial operation. And as somebody once said, the window is the invitation but the store is the party.”
The 57th Street and Fifth Avenue location, along with Vuitton’s 462 stores, will carry the whimsical collaborated collection boasting handbags, accessories, footwear, apparel and jewelry.
