LUX-Health: Tanning Beds Raises Risk of Cancer by 75%

LUXies beware, though we might have a desire for a bronzed hue all year long, it seems that the use of tanning beds or any ultraviolet radiation device can increase your risk for skin cancer. With this information in hand, we might just have to turn to moderate sun exposure and develop a love for self-tanning lotions!

A new study published by the Lancet Oncology medical journal has just released new findings that show the use of tanning beds before the age 30, can increase your chances of skin cancer by 75%. The researchers who conducted this study are experts from the International Agency for Research on Cancer—the cancer experts to the World Health Organization.

“People need to be reminded of the risks of sunbeds,” said Vincent Cogliano, one of the cancer researchers. “We hope the prevailing culture will change so teens don’t think they need to use sunbeds to get a tan.”—via LA Times

Until this point, experts were operating with the belief that only one type of ultraviolet radiation put people at risk for skin cancer. With this evidence, that’s simply no longer the case. It seems all ultraviolet radiation has been categorized as a cancer risk along side tobacco and the hepatitis B virus.

Now LUX Nation, what do we do with this information?? The positive news is that if melanoma is caught early enough, it’s 100% curable. Luckily the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery has created a free information handbook just for you with this exponential statistic in mind!

The guide is easily downloadable from their site and walks you through the self-examination process that can become part of your normal routine! They even have diagrams that you can use to document your own skin with freckles, scars, and anything else that will help you track any changes that might occur.
