LUX Look: Mustard

The ‘70s are back, and so are the hues that made the decade rock. Call it what you like – saffron, mustard, paprika – the burnt yellow shade is a fall necessity. Whether you enjoy it in a cashmere suit or on a platform pump, there are plenty of ways to use the color that reminds us of the harvest season.

What better way to celebrate a bold color than to flaunt it head to toe? The cashmere jacket and trouser by Akris is made in Europe of the softest double-faced cashmere. Although yellow can be a bright shade, this mellow interpretation makes it a great fall alternative to classic neutrals.

Another way to don the shade in everyday wear is through a cocktail dress. This Sweetheart dress by Pleasure Doing Business has the Hervé Léger look (without the price tag) and delicately combines black into the weave to create a sophisticated effect.

Perhaps a subtle pop of mustard is the way you want to go. Separates are an easy way to add a dash of the spicy color without worrying if it’s the right hue for you. This Grecian top by Donna Karan looks stunning alongside jewel tones, such as eggplant or burgundy. Or the classic shape in a soft jersey could work with tailored pants or a pencil skirt, giving abundant options for the Autumn/Winter trend.

When it comes to the cooler months, it’s all about outerwear. Sweaters can be layered and are great for every climate. Plus, you can never have too many. Thus, let’s take advantage of the colorful trend by indulging in this soft mohair sweater by Alexander Wang.

Accessories are the most economical way to incorporate a trend, whether it be a color, pattern or embellishment. A small wallet by Tory Burch will peek out from your handbag, but won’t steal the show. Sometimes you can even mix a couple of trends in one item. For example, this rope bracelet by Sabrina combines the fashionable nautical theme and a mustard cord.

Last but not least: shoes.

These pumps by Yves Saint Laurent will never go out of style. Although a peep-toe isn’t perfect for all climates, it’s a great pair to leave in the office or to enjoy while on a business trip to Los Angeles or Miami.
