May 19:  La Mer and Oceana Dive Right In

This Wednesday at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City, a fabulous event was held for two powerhouses on land and on sea: Oceana, the world’s largest ocean conservation and advocacy organization, and La Mer, the lauded skincare line, joined forces for a morning of beauty to celebrate the limited-edition 100 ml World Oceans Day Crème de la Mer, a specially created package for the luscious potion that put La Mer on the map and made tongue wagging devotees of legions of women. A number of these legions turned up at the legendary Fifth Avenue flagship in New York City where they were treated to exfoliation, facial treatments, and face and hand massages, courtesy of La Mer’s qualified aestheticians and staff. A luxurious continental breakfast was served on silver trays by uniformed waiters, along with mimosas and mineral water. What a way to start the day.

The event comes in anticipation of World Oceans Day, officially declared last year by the United Nations to be June 8 every year. At a time when everyone wants to keep the earth safe from harm, the timing couldn’t be better. This marks the fifth year of La Mer’s partnership with Oceana. Maureen Case, President of La Mer couldn’t have been more pleased with the event, and with the pairing: “My commitment to Oceana is both personal and professional. I’m an avid diver, and I was fortunate enough to be able to take my kids diving in Belize last year. I hope that one day they'll be able to take their own kids to the same unspoiled areas.”

Two stories have already appeared on LadyLUX, such is our love for the ocean, and for La Mer. On May 29, 2009 we first reported on the development of La Mer’s limited edition World Oceans Day cream and that 100 percent of the proceeds from its sale would go toward the initiatives of Oceana and protecting the ocean’s habitats and wildlife, and in the May 14, 2010 story, we reported on La Mer’s recent generous charitable donation to Oceana as well as on January Jones, star of “Mad Men” as the new spokesperson for Oceana. She will shoot an upcoming video in Belize on the fragility of the coral reefs in that country in hopes of promoting their protection. The film will go live on June 8, World Oceans Day. Jones will also hold a deep sea dive in Belize on that day to mark the occasion.

Oceana CEO Andrew Sharpless explains, “Because Belize has the second largest Barrier Reef in the world and is one the jewels of the sea, anybody who thinks about the world's oceans from a global perspective thinks about Belize.” He adds, “In late June, UNESCO added the Belize Barrier Reef to the UNESCO list of endangered World Heritage sites. With our new Oceana offices and local Belizean leaders, Oceana is focused on helping Belize to protect its incredible marine heritage and resources. I’m confident that in three or four years we’ll look back and say, ‘We made a difference for the oceans and for Belize.’”

La Mer, which is French for “the sea”, is widely hailed for Crème de la Mer, long known as the best of the best—almost a miracle cream, enriched with sea kelp and a host of other top of the line ingredients. The cream is available at select Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman stores, and through beginning this month, and will be sold globally throughout June to mark World Oceans Day.

To further keep this great cause in the headlines, an event will be thrown in the Hamptons on the East End of Long Island on July 16 at a private estate. The seafaring community will be served well by the populations that inhabit it most: fisherman and celebrities. The two will come together to celebrate and keep our oceans clean. Stay tuned for more on this event to come. For more information about World Oceans Day and the partnership between La Mer and Oceana, please visit
