Milan Fashion Week Fall 2012: Missoni

Missoni is known for knitwear featuring a variety of colors and knits in playful geometric patterns. This season, however, Angela Missoni looked to push the boundaries of the fashion house with an elaborate theme and exquisite detail. She painted a story for the Missoni Fall 2012 collection that was an ode to Mother Nature. Missoni found inspiration in the warm tones and textural elements of nature, and united them with a story of a woman that is in the city because she has to be but wants to be free in the wild. It’s the double reality of the modern woman: She is strong and powerful but still has heart.

Shown at Milan Fashion Week, the fitted looks captured the shades of nature with a palette of taupe, tan, gray, orange and chocolate. Missoni truly examined the essence of the Earth and brought it into the collection with the help of needle punching and embellishments.

The concept of bark was woven into knitwear and brought to life with embroidered lines and raised textures, while wood grain surfaces were found on leathers for pumps, boots and clutches. Metallic beadwork on sweater dresses shined like mineral crystals found in caves. Slate gray textured fur was blended with monochrome knit and layered over a metallic turtleneck bodysuit to symbolize marble stone. The idea of fire, lava and smoke was illustrated by blending an ombré gray print with an orange flamestitch. Missoni’s theme was marvelously well thought out and executed to perfection.

Whether in the city or in the wild, Missoni understands that women need protection and warmth. To provide that feeling, she created stoles to wrap around the shoulders, leather opera gloves and oversized fur collars. Long layers were piled on and cinched at the waist to play the role of armor.

The collection was a refreshing, innovative moment for the signature knits and brought new life to the fashion house. It was a clear display of Missoni’s efforts and her own heart - and quite possibly her best work yet.
