Milan Fashion Week Spring 2012: Versace

At first glance at the Versace Spring 2012 collection for Milan Fashion Week, it was pure Donatella, reported Style.com. The clean lines and brilliant white were, without a doubt, her signature. Taking a closer look, however, the talented designer took the collection on a journey under the sea with marine theme that included mermaids, seashells, seahorses and starfish.

The illuminated catwalk was the perfect setting for a magical show of looks in gleaming white; pastels of purple, yellow, green and blue; and black. The collection was a mix of seashell prints, boxy-cropped jackets and tees, corset tops, pencil skirts, neoprene bloomers, skating dresses cocktail numbers and a finale of goddess gowns.

Delightfully illustrating the mermaid theme, studs were used to create outlined patterns of seashells and starfish on the dresses and cropped jackets. Donatella was clearly inspired by studs once more this season, as the adornment also trimmed jacket sleeves and collars, plus appeared all over belts, footwear and handbags. This time around, though, the use of studs gave a more glamorous touch rather than a rocker vibe.

The finale of the show was a true Versace red carpet moment. Grecian goddess gowns with thigh-high slits dazzled the runway. The streamlined silhouettes in strapless and halter versions were stunners with oversized, jewel-encrusted starfish and strategically placed sexy cutouts. The final number was a white, midriff-baring jeweled bra top with a starfish connecting it to a floor-length skirt, which was, of course, decked out in seashells.

Completing the under-the-sea-inspired looks, footwear and accessories rounded out the show. Towering wedges and platforms with Lucite heels continued Versace’s over-the-top footwear trend from the past several seasons. Intricate, thin-strapped uppers had cutouts of seahorses and shells, while other styles exhibited mesh cuffs or gold studs.

Handbags came in lunchbox shapes and mini clutches, both covered with mermaid and seahorse prints or adorned in studs. The chain straps were fashioned of links of the Versace logo.

Rings and wristband cuffs were the final touches. Rings were crafted of oversized starfish and shell shapes, making a fun statement. Studded with zipper trims, cuffs displayed both wide versions and skinny wraparounds.

All seashells aside, the strength of the Spring collection came from Donatella’s personality and star power style. Her iconic looks and style, without a doubt, will be a hit come next season.
