Milly to launch accessories
Milly, an apparel brand known for geometric prints and an iconic shade of pink, announced that they will be launching an accessories collection. Although the jewelry line had a soft launch this spring, it will be formally introduced to the public, along with their handbags, during their spring 2011 runway show.
The designer, Michelle Smith, learned the craft while interning for Hermés in Paris, bringing back her modern yet flirtatious aesthetic for the stateside brand. Her playful nature is ever apparent in the collection of handbags and jewelry, which incorporate a northeastern nautical theme and a bold use of color.
“I set out…with the same philosophy and aesthetic as my ready-to-wear collection: smart, sexy and glamorous…a modern sensibility with a vintage vibe,” Michelle Smith told WWD.
There will be 19 handbags in total, from totes and clutches to satchels and hobos, leaving no stone unturned when it comes to Milly’s foray in the new category.
Smith approaches the collection with the same goals as her apparel, to bring quality work for a reasonable price.
“By combining her creativity with couture techniques and the highest quality fabrics, Smith creates beautiful, functional pieces that easily lend themselves to day or night, season after season,” Milly’s web site reads.
The handbags, which are made of 80 percent leather, are a contemporary price-point ranging form $250 to $525. The accessories line, which is even more accessible, may create a new group of Milly shoppers.
“Our jewelry allows the aspirational shopper that can’t necessarily afford Milly clothing to buy some nicely designed pieces,” said Andy Oshrin, Milly’s CEO and husband of Michelle Smith. He expects accessory sales will hit $5 million within the first two years.
An easy choice for a week at the Hamptons, the jewelry incorporates Milly’s charming use of materials, such as a feminine rope bracelet or a long dangling necklace featuring sea-themed beads.
The handbags and jewelry will hit retailers in January.
