New York Looks Forward to Fashion’s Night Out

It is the biggest shopping event of the year, possibly the biggest in history, and the brainchild of the biggest fashion editor of the biggest fashion magazine in the world. It’s Fashion’s Night Out, taking off tonight, September 10, with an evening of shopping in New York City as hundreds of venues open their doors from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. New York City residents will get the chance to peruse the greatest array of goods and party with the fashion elite while doing it.

Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief of Vogue, gave birth to the idea for FNO, as it’s come to be called, in the wake of the economic downturn that hit the retail sector hard in ’08 and ’09. Now, limping back, it is just the sort of program that is sure to give clothiers—really all merchants—the sort of cash register ringing they are accustomed to. Most stores around the city will be taking part, with champagne and hors d’oeuvres served gratis at many to keep shoppers in the mood. Look for the goings-on as far downtown as Cynthia Rowley’s digs in the heart of Greenwich Village to Diane von Furstenberg in the Meatpacking District to the sophisticated Balenciaga, Ferragamo, and Tod’s-among scores of others-that lie on upper Madison Avenue. It’s almost like a stylish block party, minus the shorts and tennis shoes.

And FNO has gone global too. Not just confined to NYC, the one-night event will also take place on other nights in other countries—Australia, China, the U.K., France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Russia, Spain, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey.
