Radar: Marc Jacobs poses in Bang campaign

The fashion icon is known for outfitting pastel-clad plain Janes and unassuming models to grace his campaigns. With a new provocative scent out, Bang, Marc Jacobs decided to break the mold.

Oiled up, muscles bulging, and giving a sideways glance to the camera – the viewer knows exactly what Jacobs is selling. The men’s cologne, which came to him while working out at the gym, is the designer’s first male fragrance in 10 years. Although the sexual connotations are anything but subtle, Jacobs thinks scent has a much more intimate association for men. Jacobs told Women’s Wear Daily, “Men’s fragrance, unlike women’s in a certain way, is very personal. It’s a layer on top of skin — for women, it can be like changing a makeup color, but not for men.”

Laying on a silver bed of mylar, completely nude with only an oversized perfume prop to keep him from baring all – the advertisement will definitely have heads turning. Well, in big cities that is. A PG-rated version has been created for the Midwest and the Middle East (odd places to lump together?), which feature a cropped shot of Jacobs’ holding the scent next to his face OR a close up of the bottle. Jacobs’ laughed, “I think more people are going to see [the Midwestern] version of the ad.”

Men are going to have to wait a couple months until they can grab a bit of Bang, which comes to luxury retailers on July 30. The steamy ad will hit magazine stands in September.
