Paris Fashion Week Spring 2012: Louis Vuitton

Perhaps the trendiest approach to take in fashion is to break free from the crowd. For Spring 2012, Marc Jacobs was after a change of pace, reported Style.com. Abandoning the provocative styling and edginess of his previous collection, Jacobs chose light, airy, fragile styles that still managed to be strong. The resulting Louis Vuitton collection at Paris Fashion Week was a sweet and tender fairytale of soft powdery colors on boxy mod lacey silhouettes. And no fairytale – especially a LV one – would be complete without a gleaming white runway and carousel on which to showcase it.

Beginning with broderie anglaise drop-waisted dresses in white, pale yellow and peach, the feminine collection was full of charm. Full and fitted skirts made for ladylike suits and were paired with matching ensemble jackets detailed with oversized buttons and full, lacy collars. The statement collars appeared throughout the collection, making their way onto playsuits, coats, blouses and dresses. Complementing the lace motif, floral appliqués were mixed with organza in knee-length skirts and dresses, on which Jacobs affixed plastic paillettes for a 3-D effect.

When Jacobs diverged from lacey jackets and coats, he opted for matted crocodile outerwear. Three-quarter sleeve crocodile biker jackets were combined with knee-length skirts, while thigh-baring playsuits and hot shorts were styled with long, knee-length crocodile coats for an edgy contrast. The grand finale featured a series of broderie anglaise dresses embellished with powdery blue, pink and green ombre feathers.

Jacobs didn’t miss a beat in maintaining a girliness throughout the collection. Finishing the head-to-toe looks, models wore ladylike pointy-toe crocodile pumps with metal toecaps or patent mules. Proper handbags were the order of the day, with the designer favoring crocodile totes and mesh satchels – both meant to be hand carried. Other feminine touches included rhinestone tiaras, wishbone charm jewelry and parasols.

It was definitely a sweet moment for the usually cutting-edge Louis Vuitton brand and also quite appropriate for Spring. But does that mean the fashion world should expect Jacobs to go dark once again next Fall?
