People Power Standing for the Eco-Health of Our Planet
Imagine more than 5200 events taking place in over 181 countries all in the name of our planet.
Well that’s exactly what took place last week on October 24 for ‘International Day of Climate Action.’ This was the most widespread day for environmental action to date and definitely a time to celebrate in recognition of this unified mission!
Much of this widespread success was due to an organization called 350.org whose aim is to create an ‘international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis—the solutions that science and justice demand.’
According to scientific studies conducted by Jim Hansen of NASA back in 2007, the most crucial number for our atmospheric concentrations for carbon dioxide is 350 ppm. This 350 threshold determines the chances of our planet to come back into normal fluctuation and maintain standard climate conditions we’ve become accustomed to on this planet.
In a way, you can say that we’ve finally identified the ideal temperature of our planet and currently we’re at 390 ppm and growing approximately two ppm every year. These statistics make it even more crucial to address this issue now. Making for the work we’re doing on an individual, group and global level even more important to help turn back the clock.
To bring that number down, the first task is to stop putting more carbon into the atmosphere. That means a very fast transition to sun and wind and other renewable forms of power. If we can stop pouring more carbon into the atmosphere, then forests and oceans will slowly suck some of it out of the air and return us to safe levels.—350.org
Since Hansen’s work it seems that similar studies have supported this 350 ppm boundary and it’s 350.org’s work that’s drawing even more attention to this crucial time we’re in. If you would like to learn more about the studies, click here.
Interested in being part of the change? Check out 350.org and see how you can be part of the unified action to truly combat this climate crisis. This December, world leaders are meeting to discuss this issue and to identify some areas of action, though at this time the proposal isn’t enough for our planet. Though, this can be changed by creating a unified movement of people that ensures that our world leaders handle this issue with the greatest sense of urgency.
We all matter and if each of us can find ways to cut back our own individual consumption of CO2 and also support initiatives and organizations that are utilizing more alternative means of energy then you’re using your personal power for the betterment of our planet. Now that’s LUX-worthy!
So LUXies, what’re you thoughts of the actions of 350.org? What are some ways you can commit to being a part of the difference?
