Wearable Art: LaLucca Art Bags Spring 2010

Is that a painting or a handbag? Actually, it’s both. LaLucca’s art bags are the bag brainchild of designer Laura Pimental and Bulgarian-born artist Aleksandar Kirilov, a design duo that create wearable works of art. Laura tells LadyLux, “We wanted to do something different and decided to make one-of-a-kind pieces of art that women could carry with them”.

Unlike some designers, who are incorporating pop-art or iconic classics into their designs, LaLucca only creates 100 percent original art, all by Alexsandar himself. Known for paintings and commissioned murals, Aleks is no stranger to a palette. Laura says it was an easy choice, “Aleksandar’s art is full of life, color and numerous details.”

LaLucca’s head designer, Laura holds a bachelors degree in Architectural and Interior design, as well as a master’s from the Instituto Europeo di Design, both obtained in Barcelona. A traveler of the world, Laura wanted her designs to be admired, just like the works of arts hanging in European galleries. Coincidently, her dream became a reality in 2009 when her initial art bag collection was showcased at the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Art and Design in Miami. They later pulled some nods at Miami Fashion Week, winning the Creative Accessories Design Award for LaLucca in 2009.

The spring 2010 isn’t lacking in awe-worthy pieces. Each painted canvas is vibrant, modern and beautiful. Custom-made by Aleks, each canvas is painted then shipped off to the factory to be molded into the style of your choice. A refreshing alternative to the typical designer bag, LaLucca gives patrons the chance to invest in art, but instead of confining it to a corner of your room, you can wear it everyday.

A true collectors item, LaLucca is a name to watch. Where can you find them next? “We’re planning an event coming up for New York Fashion Week. Details to come!”
