Fancy Fabric: PD Couture by Prismera Designs

Fabric and textile accessories are the new “it” item for spring. PD Couture, a new line designed by Laura Su of Prismera, features beautiful bolts of fabric such as Japanese chiffon and pleated velvet, sculpted into feminine, flowery necklaces. Appliqués, metallic details, and a special chain for each piece, make every necklace in the collection a work of art.

While some are simple and monochromatic, others stand out in bright colors with sequined broaches and mixed chains of gold and wood. Laura Su’s favorite piece? “My favorite one in the bunch is Elodie because it has so many layers of chiffon and the draping chains make it super luxe.”

A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration, Su never thought she’d end up designing jewelry. After landing her first job at a jewelry supply shop, fiddling around with the supplies led her to cultivate a new creativity. Regarding her decision to pursue jewelry, Su says “Opening myself up to other creative paths was probably the most important decision I have ever made.” Thus, Prismera Design was born.

PD Couture, aptly named within her brand, is focused on handmade, luxury textile necklaces. Many of which, including her favorite, are limited edition. From chunky cast jewelry to gemstone bracelets, Prismera seems ready to take on the design world. Where does the designer get all her inspiration? “I get inspired practically everywhere. Sometimes it comes from the challenge of working with a material that I’ve never worked with before and it’s exciting to bring something new to the table.” It could be the latter that pushed her to try something new in the PD Couture collection, abandoning her adoration for detailed metalwork and sharp lines for whimsical fabrics and romantic ruffles.

The PD designer isn’t stopping the creative juices from flowing. Simultaneously keeping on track and taking risks, Su wants to branch off and try funkier designs, “I’m preparing a fun new collection of monogrammed jewelry. I don’t want to give too much away but it uses that geometry trend that I am totally digging right now.”
