Rodarte sets sights on new footwear line

Rodarte has dipped its toe into shoe collaborations before. But now it is making a bigger push. Fronted by sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the brand will release its first mono-branded footwear collection during its New York Fashion Week show, reported WWD.

“We have always designed shoes for our collections, and we have been very lucky to work with amazing collaborators,” Kate Mulleavy said to WWD. “[Each of our collections] starts with a shoe idea, so it was [a natural move].”

The fashion house’s past partnerships include such luxury brands as Christian Louboutin, Nicholas Kirkwood and Burak Uyan. Rodarte has also created two exclusive collections, including shoe options, for Opening Ceremony.

The new shoe collection will be produced and distributed through a licensing agreement with Iris, known for manufacturing other luxury brands such as Chloé, Jil Sander and Marc Jacobs.

“[Our company] has a long history of producing highly creative shoe constructions for top European and American fashion designers,” said Iris managing director Brooks Tietjen, declaring Franco Pene, CEO of Iris’ parent company, Gibo, has long been in love with the American label.

Releasing to stores between July and September, the new collection will feature six looks and will sell for $995 up to $1,500.

Although not providing images, Tietjen released that the styles will boast unique details – including Plexiglas heels full of colored sand and Victorian and utilitarian influences – and be crafted of canvas, leather, metal and wood.

“The shoes [reflect] both the inspiration of the [fall ’12 apparel] and the aesthetics of Rodarte,” Kate Mulleavy explained.

Iris is hoping to launch in stores that offer Rodarte’s clothing, such as Barneys, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom and Bergdorf Goodman, as well as its own Iris boutiques and select specialty retailers.

The brand’s future, said Tietjen, includes expanding distribution and providing a greater range of prices, including looks for $395 to $695.
