Salvatore Ferragamo & W Magazine host event for New York foster children

Salvatore Ferragamo and W magazine hosted a private cocktail party last Thursday night at the Ferragamo flagship in Manhattan to benefit New Yorkers For Children, a nonprofit organization that brings attention to one of the most important philanthropic causes facing the world: children’s welfare.

A percentage of the evening’s sales were donated to NYFC, the evening’s beneficiary, to improve the lives of the more than 16,000 youth in foster care in New York City. The magazine regularly holds many shopping events, such as this one, to benefit great local charities. Since 1996, NYFC has made a difference through college scholarships, tutoring programs, job training and networking opportunities.

The nonprofit has made significant changes in the lives of foster children with its services: They have allocated more than $800,000 in funding for programs that serve older youth in foster care through education, mental health services, life skills and employment training; the Guardian Scholars program provides essential financial, academic and emotional support to students enrolled in two New York City colleges; and the NYFC Spirit Award bestows a $10,000 scholarship on a young person in foster care who is succeeding in college; and much more. NYFC is the only nonprofit organization in the city that partners with the Administration for Children’s Services to improve the lives of children in New York’s foster care system.

The evening included an exclusive presentation of the 2011 Resort Collection, designed by Salvatore Ferragamo’s new creative director, Massimiliano Giornetti. It is only his second collection of women’s ready-to-wear and, given that, a highly anticipated one for the legendary Italian fashion house. The excitement took place at the flagship boutique located in midtown Manhattan on Fifth Avenue at 52nd Street.

The hosts for the evening were Chiara Ferragamo, Maggie Betts, CNN news reporter Alina Cho, Natalia Echavarria, Nicole Esposito, Julie Macklowe and Karla Martinez, many of whom were wearing either the Ferragamo Fall/Winter 2010 Collection or the Resort 2011 Collection. They welcomed a very large crowd of partygoers to the large space, where specialty cocktails and Veuve Cliquot were served in abundance while DJ Kiss spun great ‘80s tunes.

Other special invited guests included Massimo Ferragamo, Tinsley Mortimer, Edgar and Clarissa Bronfman, Olivia Chantecaille, Dori Cooperman, Erin Heatherton and Brett Ratner, and the model Selita Ebanks, who grew up in foster care in New York City herself.

Giornetti’s focus was the ‘70’s and the women who globe-trotted from Palm Beach to Palm Springs to St. Tropez to Ibiza, an au-courant style which has inspired many designers in recent years. The usual luxury elements are at play here as well, from sleek clutches and gorgeous pocketbooks to superbly designed high heels and lovely dresses perfect for every occasion. With clothing that hails from such a time-honored tradition and that’s made with such craftsmanship and attention to detail, the women who buy from this collection will no doubt be very well-dressed.

“My inspiration was drawn from the modern Ferragamo woman on holiday – a ‘70’s vibe mixed with the luxury expected of a jet setter,” Giornetti said. “The mood is relaxed. The silhouette is loose in a sophisticated color palette complimented by bold accessories.”

The resort looks that evening were created exclusively by stylists from W to celebrate the 2011 collection.

“W and Ferragamo have a strong partnership,” said Karla Martinez, fashion market director at the magazine. “We believe very much in the vision of the new designer, Massimiliano Giornetti, and will continue to support the brand editorially in our issues.

“Resort continue(s) to be a strong representation of the timeless, classic pieces that Ferragamo is famous for.”
