The Skin You’re In

There is hardly a more recognizable name when it comes to fashion than Chanel. Known for its chic petite suits, pearls, and proper handbags, the line has long appealed to the most conservative of women as well as the most fashion-forward girl. Who, an ardent fashionista may ask, could get to the end of her life without at least owning one Chanel creation, purse or frock? Even those who veer more toward the punk than the princess would kill to own a double C anything. Under the leadership of Karl Lagerfeld, the House that Coco built has been able to make the transition into modernity as a result of his most subtle fashion tricks. He sticks to the nature of what Chanel put in place-smart and chic dressing-but tweaks it as he goes. And season after season, his collections continue to be desired—and ordered—by devotees worldwide.

In that vein, Lagerfeld and his team have pushed their fashion forward ever-so-slightly again with their most inventive new creation: Temporary Skin Art, or Les Trompe-L’Oeil de Chanel. Categorized under “Accessories”, the delicate drapery seems more Material Girl than merveilleux, more tattoo than Tatou, but nonetheless, we’re sure it will be a hit, like everything else they create. Upon first glance, one takes a double take at a lacey loop around the thigh or what looks like a beautiful dollop of trim gracing a décolleté. There are delicate diamond chains for one’s neck, or tiny baubles to hang on such, the traditional double C logo (in three sizes!), and a whimsical bird to add dash to one’s corporeal. Ah, whimsy. It never ceases to entertain.
