Utilizing Social Media to Encourage Canadians to Eat Local

LUXies, a new campaign to inspire healthy living by eating local has just launched in Canada! It conveys a powerful message to educate people on the current food industry and how it’s impacted by Canadian purchase power! Simply LUX-tastic!!

Hellman’s Real Food Movement campaign embodies the philosophy that ‘Knowledge is Power.’ By utilizing social media techniques and engagement principles, an impactful site,, has been created as a valuable resource to encourage Canadians to choose more local food choices.

The site utilizes blogs, Twitter feeds and Facebook Connect to encourage dialogue between individuals and organizations who take an active interest in supporting local food production and consumption. –via

This interactive website is aimed at getting 100,000 people to be a part of the Locavore solution! wink The more Canadian consumer interaction this campaign helps to generate, also translate into financial donations to ‘support local food resources and community food gardening programs run by Evergreen.’

Social media is the main vehicle for getting the word out and it seems that this new micro site, created by Dashboard, to provide valid resources to local food production has proven a success thus far.
As you can see in the video clip, it tells a powerful story and yet also conveys the message that we can all be a part of the solution!! It connects the key role of what ‘local consumer power’ is to the economy, environment and the neighborhoods. Yes, this specific campaign is geared towards Canadian residents; however, it definitely influenced me to think about how this can be true for the United States or any other country for that fact. When you get right down to it, subsistence is subsistence and each continent has its own specialty. If we as a global community could each utilize these geographically indigenous specialties and minimize the need to import in excess, WE as a whole population would be making a step for progress in the right direction.

For those of you who want to connect with like-minded individuals who are passionate about being about of the Locavore solution, gardening and wellness, check out this Social Network Site.

Check out the video for yourself and let us know what you think?!? Would this message speak to you??
