A Bid to Save the Earth 2012

People are now bidding on lavish offerings—to save our earth. On March 29, the world’s leading auction house, Christie’s International, began its third annual Green Auction: “A Bid to Save the Earth.”

The 2012 Green Auction, generously supported by JW Marriott, will be co-chaired by Graydon and Anna Carter, James R. Hedges IV, François-Henri Pinault, Salma Hayek, and David and Susan Rockefeller, and has support from a host committee comprised of New York’s most influential environmentalists, celebrities and philanthropists. FENDI is also a supporting sponsor.

“Christie’s is delighted to again host the Green Auction: Bid to Save the Earth, fulfilling our commitment to help raise crucial funds and awareness for the preservation of our planet’s precious resources,” Steven P. Murphy, chief executive officer of Christie’s International, said in a statement. “By partnering with four globally renowned and respected not-for-profits, we are honored to help serve as a catalyst in such an endearing effort.”

Initiated in 2010, this event is expected to raise significant funds to assist environmental causes with a focus on water-conservation projects. The green auction proceeds will benefit four of the world’s leading green organizations: Conservation International, Oceana, Natural Resources Defense Council and Central Park Conservancy. These non-profits are partnering together to discover solutions to environmental problems that threaten the earth’s future. To date, Christie’s has raised nearly $5 million to help its four beneficiaries.

Christie’s silent Green Auction began on March 29 and ends April 19. Featuring over 100 lots, the auction is run online and powered by Charitybuzz.com, a leader in cause marketing. Keynote items in the silent auction this year include an afternoon of shopping with Simon Doonan of Barneys, a personal styling session at Lanvin’s New York boutique, a one week paid internship at Donna Karen NYC and an exclusive Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week experience.

On Wednesday, April 11, the Bid to Save the Earth live event will be held at Christie’s Rockefeller Center in New York City. Bringing together international collectors and members of the environmental community, this event will also include a live musical performance by Grace Potter of Grace Potter & the Nocturnals.

“We must all take responsibility to protect the natural world for future generations,” said co-chair Susan Rockefeller. “Everyone can help support Christie’s Green Auction, which delivers a global message about the relevance and necessity to take action and participate in conserving the planet’s precious and finite resources.”
