Gift 300 AfricaBikes to Gambia Students in 2010
With the holiday season in full swing, it’s always a good time of year to find ways that we can give back and help others. Even if that means giving to a nonprofit, simply helping a friend or donating money, the possibilities are endless!
Through a powerful partnership between HopeFirst Foundation and Kona, these two organizations have set a goal to raise enough funds to help send 300 AfricaBikes to Gambia. These bikes will provide reliable transportation to school and ensure that kids who live in villages far from a local school can have an opportunity to learn. Some kids have to walk up to 12 miles a day to get to school and back. This simple means of transportation would completely transform their lives.
The recipient of the AfricaBikes will be the Head Master of the secondary school in these villages. S/he will be responsible to distribute (loan) the bicycles to the children that travel the farthest to reach school (as well as for the security and maintenance of bikes). The bicycles will be owned by the schools to provide a sustainable ongoing transportation program. –via Hopefirst.org
Kona has already guaranteed 100 bikes by donating the bikes themselves, and now they’re asking for your participation in purchasing the remaining 200. These bikes are made by Kona and are tough, durable and are specifically made to ride on tough terrain (dirt roads.) If you’d like to learn more about the bikes themselves, visit Konaafricabike.com.
To reach this goal you can either purchase a bike for the project with a $100 donation or simply give what you can. Every bit will go to purchase these bikes and whatever you’re willing and able to give will be greatly appreciated. To donate click HERE and thank YOU in advance for your generous appreciation to help these kids have safe and sustainable means of transportation.
Changing lives one bike at a time is truly a gift for us all. Also note that these donations are tax-deductible and since it’s the end of the year, this might be something you could financially benefit from.
So LUXies, what are some ways you can give this holiday season?
