LUX Life: Donna Karan on Life and Fashion

With New York Fashion Week on our heels, it seems only relevant to share a message from one of the fashion industry’s biggest luminaries.

Donna Karan just recently used her own runway presentation in NorthPark Center in Dallas to share from the heart to a mostly female audience. Sounding more like a fashion guru turned inspirational speaker, she urged attendees to ‘find their truth in what they want,’ both in their careers and in their style statements!! Karan urged them to see how their consumer power was directly related to the lives behind the clothes, much more than just the designers themselves.

“We are strong women — we’ve got a lot to do,” she said, as a model strolled out in a cobalt blue jacket with a dramatic oversize collar. “We’ve got to take over the world because the men need help right now.…We’ve got the power, strength and commitment, and we are all here to support each other and make a difference in this world.”

Karan clearly has some strong opinions on how to best maneuver within these changing times. She suggests retailers releasing current season designs closer to the actual season as well as maintaining full price the majority of the time. One of her biggest suggestions is having both retailers and designers come together to find ways to best strategize for all involved. Through unity and collaboration, she feels affective solutions can be reached to benefit all!!

“I think Fashion’s Night Out is an incredible opportunity to look at realigning the country in season,” she said of the Sept. 10 event, adding she wished it weren’t taking place during New York Fashion Week, when media will focus on spring 2010 collections.

Her message is strong and definitely worth investing your own time and energy into. So, we hope you’ve seen how your level of influence can impact these changing times and have officially marked your calendar for ‘Fashion’s Night Out.’

We would love to hear from you. Does her message inspire you to re-examine the role you play in the health of the fashion industry?
