Milan Fashion Week Fall 2012: Dolce & Gabbana

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana has built the Dolce & Gabbana empire on sexy, sleekness in chic dark palettes but for Spring 2012, they took a slight detour for a bright summertime spectacular of oversized floral and vegetable prints on breezy dresses and daring playsuits. Playful as it was, the design duo has reverted back to its traditions for Fall – literally. Not only has this season resumed the usual colorless colors, but they were also intrigued by Dolce’s mother country of Sicily and the baroque religious traditions.

Presented at Milan Fashion Week for Fall 2012, the collection was an elaborately lavish ‘holier than thou’ story that brought the old romance of Italy to the future. Hourglass and fitted but not skintight silhouettes dripped in gold bullion embellishments that conjured up liturgical garments. Boxy cropped jackets, velvet sheath dresses and structured lace minidresses utilized the bullion as wide panels of trim or even more extravagantly, as an all-over arrangement. Similar to the adornment, black and gold tapestry proved extravagance and when used on capes and capelets, which appeared widely throughout the collection, they look particularly like a clergy member’s cloak.

Continuing the religious motif, lace and tulle made for tiered dresses and lace skirt suits that not only offered refreshing moments from the dark ensembles but also symbolized purity as communion dresses do. Baroque and floral brocade prints were additionally paired with lace trim accents on hot shorts, ruffled blouses, slim dresses and bubble skirts to fully embrace the era.

Strict as the idea of religion is, the sheer mesh and see-through lace was bit of irony and humor from Dolce and Gabbana considering the thought of wearing diaphanous clothes to church would be more than frown upon. It was a move towards modernity that was integrated with the theme flawlessly, something this design duo does so well.
