Paris Fashion Week Fall 2012: Alexander McQueen

Sarah Burton hasn’t disappointed yet. In fact, she has done an extraordinary job continuing Alexander McQueen’s dramatic tendencies and maintaining the experimental energies that the brand is known for. This Fall 2012 season in particular, Burton has really outdone herself. The collection was inspired by the future, but avoided the typical spacey, minimalist vision. It was a pretty future with a romantic fairytale element about it. “The future's usually shown as stark and cold,” Burton said to Style.com. “I wanted lightness, the sense that the dresses were hovering.”

Presented at Paris Fashion Week, the pale-colored, over-the-top dresses were indeed light and airy with the help of feathers, organza, fur and chiffon. It was almost as if the material danced to the beat of the music with its waves of volume – which was the key to the collection.

Burton’s “future” began with pod silhouettes that slowly blossomed as the collection progressed. Graphic jacquards appeared in simple cape and tiered numbers, followed by a floral appliqué that represented cherry blossoms. Ponyskin was laser-cut into a doily pattern for structured looks, and then the blooming really began. Fur pompoms covered minidresses creating puffy silhouettes, which immediately evolved into shaggy shapes of ostrich feathers, goat fur or Mongolian lamb. Dandelion floral appliqués created an all-over effect on voluminous tiered dresses with equally voluminous sleeves. Graphic floral print dresses were ruffled up and paired with dramatic fur skirts. The finale was a spread of tiered, multilayered, extravagant theatrical gowns that embraced McQueen to the fullest. The pod was in full bloom.

There wasn’t a dull moment in the collection as looks were completed with heel-less fur space boots and oversized molded belts. Models wore visors that somehow still managed to look chic.

Burton accomplished exactly what she set out to do and, while some looks were not exactly “ready-to-wear” per se, they were magical and creative, just the way Alexander would want it.
