Radar: Marc Jacobs unveils new e-commerce site

The Marc Jacobs team has been eagerly tweeting down the days until the launch of their highly anticipated e-commerce website.

Monday night they tweeted: “The e-commerce site is going to be accessible through www.marcjacobs.com. At 6p.m. EST we will start the transition.” However, most of the world caught glimpse of the site this morning.

A play on the whole idea of shopping online (Marc Jacobs is ironic? Gasp.), the website features an animated brick-and-mortar store, letting the shopper “walk” through different levels with the click of their mouse. Muscular men in tight black tees and dark denim meet you at the front door and sassy saleswomen, girls in floral dresses or ‘80s MJ grunge, sell you just like in the store, except this time they have talk bubbles.

“Hello, would you like to see our shoes and handbags as well?” a chic woman in a black bob asks as you browse the ready-to-wear collection.

The most adorable level might be Little Marc Jacobs, the floors for little girls and boys. Although the concept of designer duds for children can be a stretch, the merchandising of the virtual shop would make it difficult for any fashion-forward parent to pass up a red trench coat or a pair of patent Mary Janes. I mean, they’re staples right?

The site features the Marc Jacobs collection, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Little Marc Jacobs and a special items section, which features reasonably priced accessories, tees, hats and canvas totes.

One flaw? Although most of the merchandise is available for viewing, not all can be dropped into the shopping cart. Some items are said to be only available in stores, a hitch surely to be fixed in the coming months.

Createthe Group was the design firm hired to do the digital makeover and it’s safe to say they easily encapsulated the brand in a digital format. Just like Marc Jacobs, the website is playful, whimsical and never serious. Although fur coats and expensive totes line the virtual walls, the web retail guys and gals sport tattoos and cat-eye glasses and a friendly attitude, just like in Jacob’s shops.
