Rodarte is no stranger to the stage. The creative sisters behind the brand, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, are designing costumes for the stage once again, but this time it is for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s production of “Don Giovanni” starring Mariusz Kwiecien.

For the costumes, the designers collaborated with Swarovski. Rodarte and Swarovski have previously worked together on multiple fashion week collections, an Atelier Swarovski by Rodarte line and Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan.” The current project for “Don Giovanni” will include six showpiece costumes including headpieces, gowns and wigs for the characters Donna Elvira, Zerlina and Donna Anna. The costumes are expected to incorporate over 130,000 Swarovski elements.

“It took a while to understand the characters, their motivations and what we wanted to visualize. Frank [Gehry, who is designing the sets] told us from the beginning that it was about the music, and our job was to help that. The costumes are the kind of thing that you want to lift the music — you don’t want to compete or kill it,” said Kate Mulleavy, as reported by WWD.com.

“Don Giovanni” is the first installment of the three-year Mozart/Da Ponte opera project. The show will run from May 18 to May 26 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
