Spring 2013 runway trends: snakeskin

There’s no doubt that python snakeskin has been a favorite lux material with designers for years. The reptilian skin has proved its popularity in handbags, footwear and the occasional sheer print, but for Spring 2013, it’s entering the realm of apparel in a big way. Runway looks sported the exotic material from head-to-toe in a variety of colors ranging from white to bright green. Rigid as the fabric is, it offered a cool, structured, boxy silhouette that was ultimately modern and on point. Dresses, separates and outerwear felt reenergized from the bold approach.

Mixed in with an array of vivid bright monochrome styles, Gucci’s collection went all out with python ensembles. Versions of heavily contrasted yellow, pink and aqua snakeskin found their way onto skirts with matching blouses, sleeveless A-line dresses and even trench coats. The textured skin was further accessorized with oversized jeweled statement necklaces.

While Gucci went with an all-over technique, Erdem joined python with delicate materials to create an unexpected combination. Strong silhouettes juxtaposed neutral skins with pastel lace, silks, jacquards and brocades. From panels to patchwork to overlaying compositions, snakeskin explored foreign territory with the London designer.

Proenza Schouler also took on a patchwork effect for their looks featuring python skins. The New York design duo pieced together blue and green shades of exotic skin to craft oversized vests, wide A-line skirts and sleeveless zip-front dresses that promise to be some of the most sought after pieces for Spring 2013. In Proenza Schouler’s interpretation, athletic-inspired boxy-shapes reign supreme.
