Although almost every woman will publicly disagree with this, I still have a theory that women secretly want to date a player. No, they don’t want him to continue to remain a player, but they like the idea of domesticating him and being the reason that “that’s all in the past.” It’s a challenge the same way it’s a challenge for younger men to sleep with as many women as possible.

No girl wants to be with a guy who isn’t sought after by other women. I used to joke in college about creating a fake Facebook profile of a hot girl. My idea was to steal some ASU sorority girl’s pictures, create a phantom account, and then get into a relationship with her. Simple economics: if my supply goes down, my demand would go up. Meaning if this gorgeous girl I’m dating can stand me, there has to be something about me worthwhile. Then my roommate explained that, even for me, that would be a new low.

So you have no doubt heard the term GMO. But do you understand the full implications for your health and our food system that genetically modified organisms present? While GMO crops and ingredients abound, the United States does not currently require companies to label which ingredients have been genetically modified, and the potential side effects of consuming DNA-altered foods are unknown.

GMOs are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered with DNA from bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals through the gene splicing method of biotechnology. This new technology combines DNA from different species, resulting in unstable and experimental meshing of plant and animal genes that never are naturally seen in nature or traditional crossbreeding.

“It is incredible to believe that GMOs are unlabeled and present in more than 80 percent of conventional processed foods, and yet they have not been thoroughly tested to show that they are truly safe for human consumption,” Courtney Pineau, assistant director of the Non-GMO Project, said.

The first commercially produced GMO dates back to 1994, when a crop of genetically modified Flavr Savr tomatoes were introduced to the market. Today, with the vast majority of processed foods containing GMOs, it is highly likely that every time you sit down to eat a meal, at least one of your dishes is serving you up some GMO-contaminated food.

Farm fresh. Cage free. Sustainable. Looks good, you think. Surely these eggs, milk, seafood and meat products will be healthier, plus save some animals from cruelty. The unfortunate truth, however, is that companies often deceive consumers into buying food items that only treat animals marginally better. Well-intentioned shoppers may look for these labels thinking to do the right thing, but, according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, these misleading labels have little impact on animals’ suffering, as well as your health.

“Many organic and free-range farms cram thousands of animals together in sheds or mud-filled lots to increase profits, just as factory farms do, and the animals often suffer through the same mutilations—such as debeaking, dehorning and castration without painkillers—that occur on factory farms,” Nicole Dao, PETA media liaison, declared. “Designations such as ‘farm fresh’ and ‘natural’ on meat, milk, and egg packages mean little, if anything, for consumers’ health or the welfare of animals.”

Shawn Wehan was talking with a friend about the huge gap between the for-profit business world and the nonprofit sector. It’s everywhere: sauces, baked goods, soy sauce. And it may be a problem for you, especially if you have an allergy or celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder in which even a trace amount of gluten can cause a horrible toxic reaction in your body. So how do you survive without gluten? Eating a gluten-free diet is not easy. It takes a lot of work and preparation.

Just because “gluten-free” seems to be the new food label does not mean gluten is harmful for all.

“The fact that there are more gluten-free products available on restaurant menus and available in the supermarket makes people think that they are better for some reason,” Janice Dada, a registered dietician with SoCal Nutrition and Wellness, said. “Gluten only affects the health of those who have celiac disease … or they have some sort of gluten intolerance. For the average person, gluten is perfectly fine. “

Gluten, she says, is simply a protein found in wheat – all its forms, including durum and semolina – rye and barley.

Chef Jenny Ross, of the restaurant 118 Degrees, on the other hand, believes cutting out gluten could make a difference in your health. “For most people, a gluten-free diet is healthier, because we are really not designed to ingest as much gluten as we do every day,” she explained.

Ross believes balance is key. She says it is crucial to find other, high-protein carbohydrates to fit into your diet, such as quinoa, buckwheat and rice, a “quick go-to for people trying to switch things out.”

I remember years ago in college, my girlfriend at the time got me a present for my birthday. She was a nice girl, but as I opened the (unnecessary) gift bag I was greeted with a brand new, tight-fitting yellow t-shirt with an insignia of a duck of some sort where the Lacoste alligator would normally be.

Women don’t shop for what their boyfriends want, they shop for what they want their boyfriends to want (and what they think they need). Today is a day to give. It is Give Out Day, the first national giving day just for LGBTQ causes. Until midnight tonight, Bolder Giving will be sponsoring an online contest to raise funds – hopefully in the realm of millions – for lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer organizations. Powered by Razoo, the giving campaign hopes to attract thousands of new and old donors along with the new dollars.

All you have to do is donate online through GiveOutDay.org. Anyone in the United States and territories is invited to participate. LGBTQ organizations are pumping up the day through social media outreach, live events and phone banks to reach as many potential contributors as possible.

“Less than 5 percent of the LGBTQ community currently gives to LGBTQ causes, according to research from the Horizons Foundation and the Movement Advancement Project,” said Bolder Giving’s Executive Director Jason Franklin. “Give OUT Day promotes a new way of giving by harnessing the power of social media and Razoo’s crowdfunding platform to inspire thousands to contribute within a 24-hour giving challenge. Give OUT Day aims to raise awareness of the need to support LGBTQ nonprofits and elevate the level of LGBTQ philanthropy.”

Internet Sales Tax Looks Likely

It looks like Internet shoppers could be slapped with sales taxes when purchasing online. The U.S. Senate is likely to pass the Marketplace Fairness Act, depending on a vote Monday, which requires all retailers on the Internet to assess sales taxes based on the states the items are shipped to, reported CNN. The next step would be passing the Republican-dominated House, after which it would become law. According to White House spokesperson Jay Carney, President Obama is in favor of the bill.

Currently, consumers are mostly able to purchase goods from websites without paying sales tax. The law says that stores must collect sales tax only on items sent to states where the store has a physical presence, say a brick-and-mortar store or a distribution center. States that charge sales tax frequently have differing rates that are dependent on the type of products being purchased. For example, sales tax on alcohol may be higher than dental equipment, or even non-existant, such as with groceries.

To put it simply, the laws are outdated. The Supreme Court last addressed the situation back in 1992, when e-commerce was in its infancy.

In the majority of states that collect sales taxes, the consumers purchasing the products online from a different state must pay a Use Tax. It falls to shoppers to keep track of what they purchase and pay the tax when filing their tax return. However, consumers often ignore this responsibility or are unaware of it, plus it is a law difficult to enforce.
