September 2012 Charity Event Guide: Everywhere
Another month, another list of the best benevolent events to fill your social calendar. Have fun and contribute to a great cause by participating in any of these events happening around the country. Whether you are running for ovarian cancer, food and wine tasting for the American Heart Association, or laughing the night away at a comedy show for mothers in need, these are worthwhile events that make giving back a snap.
What: Walk to End Alzheimer’s 2012
Where: San Francisco, CA
The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the largest fundraiser for Alzheimer’s disease, the nation’s sixth leading cause of death. On September 29, San Francisco residents will raise awareness and contribute to Alzheimer’s care, support and research by hosting the walk in Mission Creek Park. Participants can choose between a 3-mile course or a 1.5-mile shortcut, so there’s no excuse not to get out there! Don’t live in San Francisco? What: Define: Beauty Fashion Show
Where: San Francisco, CA
With another exciting union of fashion and philanthropy, the Define: Beauty Fashion Show features an impressive array of designers, including Cari Borja, Ken Chen and Dallas Coulter, and will donate all proceeds to the construction of a clean water well in Moshi, Tanzania. With the well designed to serve over 4,000 people in this community, this event promises major bang for your donated buck. Don’t miss the great fashion, gourmet snacks, and fun for a great cause on September 29.
What: My Bold Future presented by Girls Incorporated of Orange County
What: Costa Mesa, CA
Ready to see a girl become the next Steve Jobs? Attend My Bold Future to help the Orange County chapter of Girls Inc. to provide young women with science, technology, engineering and math educational programs. According to their website, the innovative services “equip girls to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers and grow into healthy, educated and independent adults.” What’s not to like? On September 21, the nonprofit invites all supporters to join them for their annual fundraising luncheon, meet some promising young women and toast to many bright futures.
What: Treasure Chest Fest 2012 presented by Green Flash Brewing Company to benefit Susan G. Komen For The Cure
Where: San Diego, CA
Beers for breast cancer? Don’t have to ask me twice! On September 8, Green Flash Brewing Company will host a festival featuring their line-up of award-winning specialty beers, gourmet food trucks, classic cars and many fun activities. For only $30, attendees will receive 10 beer tickets to sample the debut of the Treasure Chest Belgian Blonde Ale, Goddess Coffee Double Stout, Super Freak and many other delicious brews with all proceeds benefiting the San Diego chapter of Susan G. Komen. Get out there and booze for a cure!
What: TRASH at the New Children’s Museum
Where: San Diego, CA
Bring the kids and check out the many thought-provoking pieces now showing at the TRASH exhibit. Though the average American produces 4.5 pounds of trash per day, many of us pay very little attention to the impact of our waste. Twelve talented artists use sculpture, photography and mixed media to see discarded materials in a different light and imagine new possibilities for things that are often overlooked.
What: 14th Annual Run/Walk to Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer
Where: Boston, MA
Each year, approximately 14,000 women die from ovarian cancer in the United States. According to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition’s website, this is especially tragic because the disease is over 90% treatable when caught early. In an effort to save lives, the organization presents their annual 5k walk/run to help fund awareness, education and support programs. Get some exercise and contribute to this great cause on Sunday, September 9.
What: “No Laughing Matter” Comedy Show to benefit Save A Mother
Where: New York City, NY
Have some laughs and help deliver healthcare solutions to the poor in India in one shot with your ticket to “No Laughing Matter” on September 13. Held at the famed Caroline’s on Broadway, the event will be headlined by Anish Shah and features a medley of rising comedic talents. Proceeds will benefit Save A Mother’s efforts to reduce maternal mortality through education and services for the most needy families.
What: Third Annual Strut Your Mutt presented by Best Friends
Where: New York City, NY
Come to the beautiful Hudson River Park on September 29 for a relaxing two-mile stroll with your pooch to benefit participating rescue groups and support Best Friends’ mission to achieve “a time when there are no homeless pets.” Besides the chance to mingle with hundreds of other dog-lovers, the event also offers a post-walk festival featuring doggie yoga and massage, free consultations with trainers, the new PAWtanical beer garden and many fun activities for you and your pet.
What: KOOZA by Cirque du Soleil - A Benefit Performance for Promise House
Where: Dallas, TX
Experienced the magic of Cirque du Soleil with a special performance of KOOZA on September 21 at the Grand Chapiteau. Appropriately telling “the story of The Innocent, a melancholy loner in search of his place in the world,” the show will benefit the work of Promise House, a non-profit devoted to helping homeless, runaway and at-risk teens.
What: Flavors of the Heart presented by the American Heart Association
Where: Las Vegas, NV
The tastiest event on this list may also be one of the healthiest. Head to the World Market Center on September 8 for the American Heart Association’s second annual culinary celebration to raise awareness and benefit local programs. This fun event offers delicious and heart-healthy food and wine tastings by 25 of Las Vegas’ top restaurants, recipes to take home and inspiration for a more healthful lifestyle.
