Bali High

There are few things that cure the stresses of life more than getting away to an exotic locale—especially when it is a world away, and in a locale like Bali. Placing oneself in a culture so different from what one knows is sometimes the only way to true transformation-the object, after all, of the getaway in the first place.

Nestled deep in the forests of Indonesia, Villa Bukit Naga is that transformative place, as well as one that truly offers the ultimate in privacy. Many places doth protest such, but this is the real thing: The Villa is privately owned, possessing only three buildings with a total of six bedrooms, and private staff, including private chef, perfect if you vowed not to cook while away. The staff will buy what you desire at the local markets and stock your kitchen full, as long as you give them a shopping list before your arrival (meals are all charged separately-but dining rooms are outside!). Each residence has a villa manager as well to look after your every need. Eastern culture meets Western standards and sophistication here, to be sure. The main house, on two levels, features a large master suite upstairs with balcony that looks over the hilltop setting (and a refreshment bar to imbibe in while there), and a master bath done in the Javanese style. The downstairs contains two bedrooms, both with private indoor/outdoor garden, as well as a huge living/dining area and entertainment room. There is a two-bedroom villa on two floors as well, each with a living and dining area, large baths, private infinity pools, and gyms—just in case all the sitting around in paradise is getting to you. The serene one-bedroom villa contains a Jacuzzi, as well as a private balcony to take in the view.

A total of 13 people can be accommodated here—perfect for a small wedding, or a large family getaway. Amenities abound too, the kind one would want whether on vacation or not, like air conditioning, DVD library, Internet connection, television, books, CDs. After all, too much relaxation could become repetitive. If that’s your goal though, a variety of spa treatments are at the ready to work out your kinks.

If you’d rather be more active, the mountains and the beaches are a short drive away, with numerous sporting activities on offer, as are local towns and religious sites. Ubud is also right nearby, but let the car and driver take you there (part of the package). It’s a thriving town, full of cultural events, five-star hotels, top-rate restaurants and bars, and fabulous shopping. It has attracted in equal number those involved in the natural world, keeping environmentalism at the forefront of Bali even while it develops, making it near and dear to our LUX heart. Nothing like preservation to keep a place really luxurious, we say.
