Bid to Save the Earth raises $1.4 million

All kinds of environmental charities are smiling. Christie’s The Green Auction: Bid to Save the Earth has just raised $1.4 million to benefit eco-friendly nonprofits: Conservation International, Oceana, Natural Resources Defense Council and The Central Park Conservancy.

And there’s more to come. While Tuesday’s live auction has closed, many extraordinary opportunities are available in the online auction until April 7, which is hoped to haul in more much-needed funds to save the planet.

Hosted by Seth Meyers, the live auction ended after some incredible bidding. The prize for drawing the most cash went to both an Academy Award experience and a day with former President Bill Clinton, which each pulled in $100,000.

“Last night’s success will support these venerable environmental organizations in conducting research and generating projects that will yield groundbreaking results for the present and future generations. Christie’s is more than proud to be a global catalyst in such a noble endeavor,” said Ed Dolman, Christie’s chairman, in a statement.

This was the first year that Christie’s partnered with Runway to Green. Runway to Green, charitybuzz and Christie’s—plus a number of leaders from the worlds of art, business, fashion, philanthropy, conservation and celebrity—all came together to make this fantastic evening happen.

The night also featured a performance by Nicki Minaj and a runway show showcasing brands such as Balenciaga, Burberry, Gucci, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent, Thakoon and Jason Wu. Attendees could buy the items on the spot, plus benefit the environment with 10 percent of purchases earmarked for charity.

The mood was occasionally light.

“I’m so happy to be here at the second — and considering recent environmental catastrophes, possibly the final — bid to save the earth!” Meyers joked to WWD. “Hope I’m not the host who’s responsible for the earth dying!”

There is plenty of time to bid on your favs. Powered by charitybuzz, a specialist in online charity auctions, the Web component of the event will be open until April 7.
