Copenhagen Fashion Week Fall 2012: Edith & Ella

There was nothing quiet about Edith & Ella’s Fall 2012 collection. What began in soft cream tones quickly turned into a party of blindingly bright, vibrant shades. The hues were intermixed in such a playful manner that it appears this allegedly Fall collection was a season or two early. But it is the bold colors that founder and designer Line Markvardsen has built the brand on. So if the formula works, don’t change it.

Fall 2012 shown at Copenhagen Fashion Week was largely an assortment of dresses and skirts that, through conservative silhouettes, exuded a girly, whimsical quality and a sense of sophistication. A-line skirts, long trench coats, swinging cape coats, knitted turtlenecks and flowing jumpsuits were abundant. But the looks truly came alive once they ditched the sensible neutral shades in exchange for bursts of bold color.

Yet it wasn’t just the color that made this collection shine. It was the unexpected styling techniques. Mint-green blouses with Peter Pan collars were paired with forest green tights, fuchsia pumps and mustard, high-waist shorts. Leopard button-ups were styled with teal toggle coats and sunshine-yellow miniskirts. Loose, yellow shiftdresses contrasted with orange tights and pale blue pumps.

The loud colors became the foundation for darker tones. A yellow skirt with orange tights and pink pumps were matched with a deep, lush green pussybow blouse and a wine-red coat. It was a brave showing of colorblock looks.

Markvardsen didn’t just stir up color; she gave prints and patterns the same treatment. Cropped plaid jackets were teamed with leopard pencil skirts, striped knits met colorblock miniskirts, and menswear pattern coats displayed speckled wool A-line skirts.

Not everyone can pull off the color explosion from Edith & Ella, but for those that can and do, it’s an amazing statement.
