Fall 2012 Trend Wrap-up from A-Z: Part 4

U is for Uniform. Designers were inspired this season by the uniform, particularly the military uniform. This trend brought colors such as olive and khaki to the fore and influenced material choices. Outerwear channeled silhouettes from officer’s coats and jackets, with some styles finished with button details, as seen in Jason Wu. Gloves, peaked caps, belts and boots completed the tough-looking ensembles.

V is for Variegated Stripes. Exhibiting different colors and widths, variegated stripes gave an update to the classic pattern. The new stripes appeared on knits, wovens and even handbags, as seen in Marc by Marc Jacobs. Designers switched it up and turned the lines vertical for a different perspective or blended horizontal with vertical for the freshest take.

W is for Winter Florals. Bright, vibrant florals from Spring turned to the dark side for Winter as moody rose, camellia and orchid blossoms were placed on shadowy backgrounds. In a different twist, Christopher Kane reversed his Winter florals, showcasing black flowers on purple. Designers amplified the mysterious, romantic vibe with silks, lace and lush velvets.

X is for Xtra Long Coats. Providing warmth and protection, xtra long coats were a popular silhouette on the runway. Dramatic, enveloping versions from Thomas Tait swept the runway and were cape-like while Daks presented coats as oversized as they were long. Even with the exaggerated lengths, designers still went bold on the color and offered crimson red, military green and textured patterns.

Y is for Yellow Gold. In an era of opulence, yellow gold is bound to make its way into collections. Designers illustrated extravagance through the vibrant shade, especially with embroidery, paillettes, beadwork and lace overlaid on black fabric. Yellow gold embellishments were added to handbags and hair accessories while footwear continued the theme with shiny all-over color, toe-caps or intricate designs as presented by Dolce and Gabbana.

Z is for Zesty Yellow. The traditional Spring color brought zest and vibrancy to the Fall collections. Shown in bold shades as well as muted tones, designers including Lanvin and Versus crafted dresses in the color while Moschino and Dsquared presented it in outerwear. Burberry Prorsum used it as a punch of excitement with sweet bow belts to cinch coats. Clutches in zesty yellow also made an impact on ensembles.
