LUX Look: Plaid

We’ve been seeing plaid for the past season or so and it doesn’t look like its going anywhere for Fall 2010. Designers this season are still inspired by lumberjacks, kilts, and early 90’s grunge but are stepping it up a couple chic notches for the runway.

Across the board, variations of plaid appeared in dresses, skirts, shorts, jackets, coats, and pants. There were even plaid bloomer shorts courtesy of Comme des Garçons. With a touch of plaid, basic silhouettes became new and fresh again. Louis Vuitton and Adam took the print a step beyond the norm and utilized it in their collections with fifties-sixties wasp waists, circle skirts and breezy floor length dresses, respectively.

When it came to colors, designers didn’t shy away and play down the print. Checkered prints were shown in traditional reds and greens, black and whites, greys, tans and Vivienne Westwood even dabbled in fuchsia. The season’s best colors of olives, greys, tans and reds were remixed together to create some of the most interesting combinations.

On the runway, plaid was styled in a more sophisticated manner than before. Adam had dresses paired with infinity scarves and cinched at the waist with belts. Some collections kept it simple by pairing sleek blacks or greys and letting the plaid take the spotlight, while others such as Besoni and Rodarte mixed in prints and bold colors, giving it a more modern vibe. Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. collection held true to the 90’s and No Doubt by pairing military plaid jackets with boyfriend jeans and laced-up boots.

So don’t toss your plaids just yet. Get re-inspired, re-style, and remix it up. And who knows, preppy plaid might be next…
