NYFW live show: Marc by Marc Jacobs Collection

Today, designer Marc Jacobs put up a live streaming of his Marc by Marc Jacobs spring 2011 collection on his Web site, allowing his digital fans to sit front-row, without stressing over a coveted NYFW ticket. Here’s the LadyLux lowdown:

While Marc’s usual clash of patterns is a look most women would sit on pins and needles for, his current Marc by Marc Jacob’s collection strays away from the whimsical and opts for a much more sophisticated appearance.

The collection was ladylike, perhaps reminiscent of a scene from the film “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” Clearly inspired by 1950s European preppy, it was a stark contrast to his Marc Jacobs show, which embodied a minimalistic ‘70s vibe. The playful combination of blues, reds and chartreuse added a youthful touch to the line.

A-line skirts and pleated trousers were the silhouettes of choice, while frizzed, pulled-back hair and orange matte lips kept looks modern, plus incorporated some MJ irony. Fashion Week’s trends were predominant on the runway, such as military motifs, sheer fabrics and neutrals. However, the pieces had the signature Marc twist, giving a subtler interpretation of spring’s future fads.

Rough military detailing was made soft through rolled-up, silk button-ups and shell-helmet hat pieces. Reds, yellows and blues popped in horizontal stripes and Marc’s bold signature handbags. Sheer cuts, normally left to the boudoir, got dignified with Peter Pan collars and femme-gathered sleeves. Neutral grays and beiges – a big spring trend – made their appearance in wide-legged bottoms, silk skirts and voluminous coats.

Although there was a menswear motif, Marc stayed true to his roots with his signature femme prep: flirty silk dresses embraced modest necklines, cinched waists and bowlike detailing. As for accessories, bangles and gold accents gave edgy looks while chokers made a ‘90s comeback, adorning the elegant necks of several models.

Catering both to a ladylike aesthetic and playful atmosphere, Marc Jacob’s collection was a beautiful juxtaposition of the relaxed and put-together.
