Nicola Formichetti backs emerging Chinese designers

Collaborating with China’s Modern Weekly and artist Yi Zhou, Nicola Formichetti will showcase a unique exhibition at his new pop-up store, Nicola’s. Releasing tomorrow, the show will present and advance up-and-coming Chinese designers, reported WWD.

Nine fortunate designers from China – Shao Yan Chen, Qiu Hao, Joseph Li, Masha Ma, Uma Wang, Du Yang, Jin Chong Yu, Xiao Yu, and Huishan Zhang – will have their looks styled by Formichetti, the famed stylist of Lady Gaga and current creative director at Mugler.

In partnership with Zhou (art director of Todou, the Chinese version of YouTube), Formichetti has also created a brief film with an “East-meets-West” theme. Shot in New York neighborhoods such as Chinatown and Brooklyn, the film will be exhibited on the pop-up store’s display screens.

“For my pop-up store I wanted to create a living, breathing organism with multiple inspirations that change daily,” Formichetti told WWD. “We wanted to merge East meets West. I wanted to be able to invite all the Chinese people, no matter if they are in New York or not.”'

Toward this end, he has created an online effort that covers social media networks including Weibo (a Chinese microblogging platform), Tudou, Twitter and Facebook. And there is buzz Lady Gaga may make a special appearance.

For those interested in taking a peek, Nicola’s is located on 50 Walker St. and open until Sept. 22.
