Oscar de la Renta to Michelle Obama: Wear American

It seems Oscar de la Renta found something rather peculiar about the first lady’s wardrobe during the state dinner with Chinese president, Hu Jintao: It was designed by Alexander McQueen.

Nothing against the Brits, he said, but shouldn’t Michelle Obama be promoting American designers?

Obama also wore the British designer Roksanda Ilincic during President Jintao’s stay.

“My understanding is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade — American products in China and Chinese products in America,” de la Renta told WWD. “Why do you wear European clothes?”

Michelle Obama has been quite influential with her style. The $148 White House/Black Market dress she wore on The View last year sparked a media frenzy, not only for being affordable, but also revealing that Obama shops where everyday women do.

She’s also gotten the name out about unknown designers. During a recent trip to India and Indonesia, she wore a dress by French designer Kevork Kiledjian, a virtually unknown name in the U.S. outside of the Chicago boutique Ikam.

Her tastes appear diverse, and although the first lady has not commented on her state dinner choice, it is difficult to be hard on her for celebrating the late designer, even if he isn’t from our country.
