Paris Couture Fall 2011: Shades of White

Throughout the Paris couture runway, shades of white appeared across the board. Designers still showed many dark colors and, of course, black is always a favorite, but nearly every designer displayed several white looks or created his or her entire collection using variations on white, reported WWD and Style.com.

White was the perfect choice this Fall season for long column dresses, as seen by Elie Saab, Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexis Mabille and Anne Valerie Hash. The designers chose cascading silks, chiffon, lace and tonal embellishments, producing a magical, romantic feel with their pieces. Christian Dior’s colorful collection also had a white set that took the color to another level with full Cinderella gowns. These dresses featured skirts volumized with layers of accordion pleats and tulle, giving the gowns intense depth and texture.

Iris van Herpen chose an off-white shade for her futuristic 3-D dresses, creating a clean, minimalist appeal. While Maxime Simoens’ collection showcased an army of models in crisps black looks, her final number was a white pantsuit with a flowing sheath, white sandals and a crystal necklace. The last look left a refreshing impression to an otherwise gloomy show. Valentino’s snapshot of white showed skirts, capes, pantsuits, sleeveless gowns and even cape dresses in the purest tone.

Givenchy and Saab went the distance in white. Half of Saab’s collection featured pure, elegant white tones. He started with pale silvery-blue tones, graduating into clean whites, then into creamier shades.

Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci chose a luxurious white to create nine of his 10 looks. The floor-length gowns were embellished with a plethora of white beads, pearls, feathers, fringe and handmade rosettes. The long clean lines and cutouts were enhanced by the purity of white. The colorless palette is an unusual departure from Tisci’s dark, shadowy vibes, but the gown collection definitely still showed his incredible detailing.

Taking a note from this couture season, white is Fall’s color of choice to dress up, boast clean lines and look fresh.
